Aldi has once again secured the title of the most budget-friendly supermarket for the month, as per the recent price evaluation conducted by Which? The comparison involved 89 items on a shopping list for February, revealing that the average cost at Aldi stood at £161.56 throughout the month.
Lidl followed closely behind, with a slight difference of £1.19, pricing their list at £162.75. Asda claimed the third spot with a total of £181.06, while Tesco, with a Clubcard, came in at £181.58.
The selection of 89 items encompassed both branded and own-brand products, including Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
For a smaller item list, Waitrose emerged as the priciest supermarket this month, averaging at £217.02, a considerable £55.46 more than Aldi.
In a separate comparison involving 225 items, Tesco emerged as the most economical choice for Clubcard holders, with the larger shop costing £580.35, undercutting Asda by £3.97.
Without a Clubcard, the same Tesco shop tallied up to £629.25, an additional £48.90. Notably, Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this comparison due to their narrower product range compared to other supermarkets.
Waitrose also maintained its status as the most expensive option on average, with the larger shop totaling £650.11, a £69.76 difference from Tesco with a Clubcard.
Which? considered special offer prices and loyalty discounts in their analysis but omitted multibuy deals.
Reena Sewraz, the Retail Editor at Which?, remarked, “Aldi has clinched the top position this month, but the intense competition between discount stores keeps Lidl as an excellent choice for those seeking to trim their grocery expenses.”
She added, “Tesco’s Clubcard provides great value for those who prefer branded items, and we anticipate wider accessibility to these savings from Tesco later this year.”
Highlighting the financial pressures consumers face, Sewraz emphasized, “Our research underscores that being selective about your shopping destination can result in significant savings, potentially saving hundreds of pounds annually.”
