“DWP Extends PIP Awards to Address Backlog”

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced that the duration of initial awards for individuals applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be prolonged starting in April to address the existing backlog.

PIP serves as the primary disability benefit for working-age individuals in the UK. Eligibility for PIP is not solely determined by the medical condition but by how it impacts daily life. Currently, PIP awards can be as brief as nine months.

Effective April 2026, changes will extend the minimum duration of PIP awards to three years for most new claimants aged 25 and above. This period may increase to five years upon the next review if entitlement remains.

The aim of this measure, according to the DWP, is to enable health professionals to conduct more in-person assessments and facilitate additional reassessments. These operational adjustments are distinct from the ongoing Timms Review, which will examine PIP’s role, criteria for daily living and mobility components, and the assessment process.

PIP comprises two components: daily living and mobility. Weekly rates for the standard and higher levels differ, with the daily living rate ranging from £73.90 to £110.40 and the mobility rate from £29.20 to £77.05. It is crucial to inform the DWP promptly of any changes in health or condition.

Individuals classified as terminally ill typically receive PIP automatically without an assessment. Under the special rules for terminal illness, the award lasts for three years before undergoing review.

PIP is accessible for individuals aged over 16 but below state pension age. If a claimant reaches state pension age while on PIP, the claim usually continues. Reapplying at state pension age within 12 months of previous eligibility may be possible.
