Travel experts are cautioning that holiday costs may increase if the conflict in the Middle East persists. Due to the Foreign Office’s advisory against non-essential travel to countries like the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar, numerous flights have been canceled. Other travel destinations could also see higher prices soon, as jet fuel costs have surged in northwest Europe to $1,500 per tonne from $830 per tonne pre-Iran air strikes.
Independent travel specialist, Jane Hawkes, highlighted that the Middle East conflict’s impact on holiday prices could extend beyond affected regions. Factors such as escalating oil prices leading to increased airline operational expenses and shifting passenger demand towards safer destinations could contribute to rising flight and accommodation costs. Additionally, Andrea Platania from Transfeero noted that rerouting flights away from the Middle East might further drive up prices due to increased fuel expenses.
Moreover, the cost of accommodations, rental cars, and tours could also be affected by heightened demand and potential fuel price hikes. Recent reports from the RAC indicate petrol price increases to 136p a litre and diesel to 147p a litre. With the geopolitical situation leading to fuel price volatility, travelers may experience elevated expenses across various aspects of their trips.
Richard Young, CEO of selfcatering.co.uk, mentioned that staycation prices might also see an uptick as travelers opt for safer options amid global uncertainty and fuel price spikes. Interest in self-catering breaks is likely to rise, offering families more space and flexibility without the hassles of overseas travel. Popular regions like Yorkshire Dales, Norfolk, Northumberland, Devon, Cotswolds, Lake District, and Highland spots such as Braemar, Fort William, and Inverness could witness increased visitation as people seek domestic getaways.
