Two individuals, identified as a father and son, carried out a mass shooting incident at Bondi Beach in Sydney, as stated by New South Wales Police commissioner Mal Lanyon during a press briefing. The elder gunman, who was fatally shot by law enforcement, possessed licenses for six firearms, of which six were recovered at the scene in Bondi Beach. Additionally, two “active devices” of rudimentary construction were discovered and safely neutralized. Luckily, these devices were not triggered.
New South Wales Police updated the public, revealing that the victims’ ages ranged from 10 to 87 years old. Fourteen individuals lost their lives on-site, including a 10-year-old girl and a 40-year-old man who passed away in the hospital. Furthermore, 42 injured persons, including four children, were transported to hospitals throughout Sydney.
Presently, five individuals are in critical condition, with the remainder in serious or stable states, as per the police force. Two police officers, a constable, and a probationary constable, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently in serious but stable conditions.
One of the victims, British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who served as an assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi, was identified. His family remembers him as a cheerful and positive figure. Rabbi Schlanger, who hailed from Temple Fortune in North London and had connections to Kinloss Synagogue in Finchley, recently welcomed a newborn son with his wife, Chayala.
Rabbi Zalman Lewis, Rabbi Schlanger’s cousin based in Brighton, expressed disbelief at the tragic end to the life of a rabbi who sought to spread joy and light while visiting the beach.
In a separate act of bravery, Ahmed al Ahmed, a father of two from Sydney, has been commended for confronting one of the gunmen, disarming him, and preventing further harm. Videos circulating on social media show Mr. Ahmed subduing the gunman, who then retreats. Despite sustaining bullet wounds to his arm and hand, the 43-year-old fruit shop owner is hailed as a hero by his family and praised by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns.
