Bondi Beach’s brave hero, Ahmed al-Ahmed, who sustained gunshot wounds while disarming an attacker, has shared his account of the incident. The 43-year-old bystander was struck by five bullets during the altercation at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, where he managed to seize the weapon from one of the assailants. Following this, Mr. al-Ahmed turned the weapon on the attacker, compelling them to retreat. His swift actions were commended by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, who lauded him for potentially saving many lives.
The tragic event unfolded during a mass shooting at a Hanukkah event, allegedly carried out by father Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed, 24, resulting in the deaths of sixteen individuals, including a 10-year-old girl and the elder attacker. Additionally, dozens were injured, with 22 individuals, including two police officers, still receiving medical attention.
In an interview with Turkish state broadcaster TRT World from his hospital bed, Mr. al-Ahmed expressed gratitude for the support he has received. He conveyed his struggles and requested prayers for his recovery, emphasizing the severity of his injuries, which his former immigration lawyer, Sam Issa, described as more critical than initially reported.
Despite his difficult situation, Mr. al-Ahmed remains resolute, expressing willingness to take the same actions again if needed. His bravery has garnered widespread praise, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese describing him as a national hero embodying the values of courage and selflessness.
During a visit to Mr. al-Ahmed, Prime Minister Albanese also met the hero’s parents, who have traveled from Syria to be by his side. The prime minister lauded Mr. al-Ahmed’s bravery in the face of adversity, highlighting his exemplary character in the wake of the tragic event.
Further surgery is planned for Mr. al-Ahmed on Wednesday, as he continues to recover from his injuries. His heroism has not gone unnoticed, with US President Donald Trump also acknowledging his courageous actions during a recent speech.
A GoFundMe campaign established for Mr. al-Ahmed has received overwhelming support, raising over AU$2 million, with contributions from various individuals, including US billionaire Bill Ackman.
