Despite the chaos, the victim’s loyal dog stayed by his side until the end. The heart-wrenching scene was captured on video showing a Bernese Mountain dog guarding its deceased owner after the gunmen targeted a group celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukah.
The attack, which resulted in the death of at least 16 individuals, including one of the gunmen who was shot by law enforcement, has sent shockwaves across Australia and beyond. Distressing footage shows the dog named Maui anxiously standing near the crime scene amidst gunshots but refusing to abandon its owner.
Efforts were made to reunite Maui with its owners after videos surfaced showing the dog and one of the gunmen in close proximity during the tragic event. Fortunately, Maui has been safely returned to the victim’s wife, who survived the attack, with support from the local community and online groups dedicated to reuniting lost pets.
The deceased victim, identified as Maui’s owner, was walking with his wife and their other dog when the gunmen launched the deadly assault. Anne-Marie Curry, from Arthur and Co Pet Detectives, confirmed that Maui is now under the care of the victim’s wife. Friends and acquaintances of the victim have expressed their condolences and described him as a kind-hearted individual.
The perpetrators behind the heinous act, Sajid and Naveed Akram, a father-and-son duo, carried out the terrorist attack that claimed the lives of several innocent individuals, including a Holocaust survivor, a rabbi, and a young girl. The duo’s connection to ISIS is suspected, with reports indicating recent travel to the Philippines and the recovery of explosive devices and extremist materials linked to the attackers.
Following the attack, numerous individuals were hospitalized, including Naveed, who remains in critical condition. The police commissioner revealed that the assailants had ties to extremist ideologies, further highlighting the gravity of the situation.
