Ukrainian intelligence agencies have issued a warning that no Russian oil facility is secure, following an attack on a third major oil platform within a few days. In response, Moscow set fire to civilian apartment buildings. These incidents occurred amidst tense negotiations for a ceasefire, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky affirming that Ukraine will not relinquish control of the disputed Donbas region.
After recent discussions in Germany, Zelensky mentioned that the US proposed transforming the Donbas, a region largely occupied by Russia, into a free economic zone. However, he clarified that this proposal does not entail surrendering territory to Moscow. Zelensky emphasized that their stance is practical, realistic, and fair, reiterating their commitment to retaining control of Donbas without being under Russian jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has expanded its targeting of Russian oil supplies in an effort to disrupt President Putin’s financial resources for the war. Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) deployed long-range drones to strike Russian oil production platforms in the Caspian Sea for the third time in a week. The latest attack targeted a platform operated by Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft at the Korchagin oil and gas field, causing production to halt.
Sources revealed that the SBU’s Alpha Special Operations Centre conducted the operation with the objective of disrupting Russia’s oil revenues and weakening their ability to finance the conflict against Ukraine. A military insider remarked that no Russian oil facility is currently safe, highlighting the heightened tensions between the two countries.
In a separate development, Russian military aggression towards the UK has been highlighted by Britain’s Chief of the Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Richard Knighton, and the new head of MI6, Blaize Metreweli. Air Chief Marshal Knighton emphasized the continuous cyber-attacks from Russia and the potential threats posed by Russian agents on British soil. He acknowledged Russia’s rapid military growth and combat experience, urging the UK to enhance its defenses against hybrid threats.
MI6 chief Blaise Metreweli stressed the omnipresent nature of the current security challenges, describing the frontline as being everywhere amid a period of uncertainty in countering the Russian threat. The UK is advised to bolster its defenses and adapt to the evolving landscape of global security.
