A killer whale known as the loneliest in the world has passed away after 33 years since his controversial rescue. Kshamenk, the final captive orca in Argentina, died at the Mundo Marino (Marine World) theme park in San Clemente on Sunday due to cardiorespiratory arrest, as confirmed by park officials.
The announcement of Kshamenk’s death was made by Mundo Marino on December 14, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the male orca. An investigation into the cause of death has been initiated, with initial indications pointing to his advanced age as a factor from which he could not recover. Female orcas typically live around 50 years, while male orcas have an average lifespan of about 29 years, as per the Center for Whale Research.
Juan Pablo Loureiro, the head veterinarian at Mundo Marino, shared sentiments of grief, stating that Kshamenk’s passing was a profound loss for the dedicated team that had cared for him around the clock for 33 years. Despite the sadness, there is solace in knowing that Kshamenk was looked after with love and that the lessons learned from him will continue to guide efforts towards animal conservation.
Kshamenk’s journey to Mundo Marino began in 1992 after a disputed rescue at the age of three. Criticism surrounded his captivity, with some alleging intentional stranding and concerns about his health. Despite these controversies, he remained at the park for over three decades. Kshamenk’s companion, Belen, passed away in 2000, leaving him alone. Efforts were made to artificially inseminate a female orca using his sperm, but Kshamenk never had the opportunity to meet his offspring.
Over time, observers noted a decline in Kshamenk’s health, with significant weight loss by 2022. However, by December 2023, there were signs of improvement as the killer whale appeared to have regained some lost weight.
