An ambitious project is underway to construct the world’s longest underwater tunnel, situated 400 meters below the sea level, spanning a colossal distance of 27 kilometers (approximately 17 miles) to connect Randaberg and Bokn in Norway. This engineering marvel, known as the Rogfast Tunnel or Boknafjord Tunnel, will feature a double roundabout beneath the sea, linking with the island of Kvitsøy.
Commencing in January 2018, the construction faced a temporary halt in 2019 due to rising costs but resumed in 2021 following revised plans, aiming for completion by 2033. The project encountered challenges due to the depth beneath the North Sea, including issues like saltwater leaks and high pressure at the deepest point exceeding 40 bars.
Part of a significant redevelopment plan for the E39 coastal route between Trondheim and Kristiansand, the tunnel aims to reduce travel time from 21 hours to approximately 11 hours by eliminating ferry crossings. The entire project is anticipated to conclude by 2050, costing around £472 million and accommodating about 4,000 daily vehicles. An art installation within the tunnel is planned to enhance the travel experience and alleviate tunnel anxiety.
The project’s designers emphasize sustainability by implementing energy-saving measures, reducing material consumption, and exploring energy harvesting from wind, solar, waves, and geothermal sources. Once completed, the Rogfast Tunnel will not only claim the title of the world’s longest subsea tunnel but also be the planet’s longest four-lane road tunnel, the deepest four-lane road tunnel, and host the deepest underwater junction globally.
