In just half a year, the UK is gearing up for a significant transformation in its communication network, marking one of the most significant upgrades in decades. The impending switch-off of the country’s aged copper phone system in January 2027 will signal the end of traditional landlines, making way for the introduction of Digital Voice, a novel service that leverages broadband connections for making calls instead of the longstanding copper infrastructure.
Households are being urged not to overlook this major shift, as failure to transition to Digital Voice could result in the loss of their current landline services. Although the deadline is six months away, the transition is rapidly gaining momentum. BT’s Openreach, the operator of the UK’s largest broadband network, has issued “stop sell” notifications at an additional 112 telephone exchanges. This action prohibits broadband providers, including BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, from selling or migrating customers to older copper-based broadband and phone services in those specific areas.
The expansion of the “Stop Sell” initiative now covers a total of 1,572 exchanges, impacting approximately 15.4 million residences and businesses across the UK. Despite the perceived challenge of transitioning to full fiber and Digital Voice, the shift promises numerous advantages, such as heightened broadband speeds, enhanced connectivity reliability, and a modernized phone service better suited for the digital landscape.
