In a heartwarming display of solidarity, a close-knit community in Wales rallied together three years ago to support a young girl fighting for her life. Now, that same community has come together once again, this time to show their gratitude and support for the charity that had been a pillar of strength for them during a challenging time.
The journey began in 2021 when two-year-old Olivia Finch of Bryn, Neath Port Talbot, fell seriously ill, displaying symptoms that raised alarm bells for her parents, Kelly and Nick. After a harrowing wait for answers, they received the devastating news of Olivia’s diagnosis with stage four neuroblastoma, a severe childhood cancer with a 50% survival rate.
Word spread quickly through the village, prompting an outpouring of support for the Finch family. The community banded together to raise funds for Olivia’s potential life-saving treatment, which led to an overwhelming response both locally and internationally, with contributions pouring in from places as far as South Africa and Australia.
Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, the community’s unwavering support continued as Olivia underwent various treatments. The family’s persistence paid off when access to a crucial treatment was secured through the NHS, resulting in significant progress in Olivia’s battle against the disease.
As Olivia’s journey unfolded, the community remained by her side, offering comfort and assistance every step of the way. Despite facing hurdles in her treatment, Olivia’s resilience shone through, inspiring those around her with her positive attitude and strength.
In a touching gesture of solidarity, Cwmafan Primary School joined the cause, organizing fundraising efforts that surpassed all expectations. Led by the children’s enthusiasm and dedication, the school’s initiative raised a substantial amount for the charity supporting Olivia, highlighting the power of community and compassion in times of need.
Today, Olivia continues to receive palliative care through Tŷ Hafan, where she is embraced with warmth and care, challenging perceptions of hospice care and fostering a sense of joy and comfort for the family.
In the face of adversity, the Finch family remains surrounded by a network of support, reflecting the unwavering spirit of their community, school, and charity, as they stand together in solidarity, ensuring that Olivia’s courage is met with love and strength every step of the way.
