German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has declared that Germany will respond to Russian aggression and attacks. In an interview on ZDF television, the politician hailed recent diplomatic efforts in Berlin to resolve the conflict in Ukraine as a significant success. Merz noted progress in talks, especially regarding the US’s readiness to support Ukraine with security guarantees post-ceasefire.
During an appearance on the show “What now, Mr. Merz?”, the German leader mentioned discussions about a security guarantee similar to NATO’s Article 5, which mandates collective defense among alliance members. Merz highlighted the importance of the US committing to safeguarding Ukraine as if it were NATO territory, marking a significant shift in American policy.
Merz proposed the establishment of a demilitarized zone between conflicting parties and warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that Germany would retaliate against any aggression. Amid escalating tensions, former NATO official Roderich Kiesewetter raised concerns about Russia amassing over 360,000 troops near European borders, potentially signaling broader military ambitions beyond Ukraine.
