Caitlyn Moony shares her journey of relocating to Vancouver, aiming to establish roots in the city. Originally hailing from Johannesburg, she embraced the prospect of settling in a city her sister and family already called home. However, her initial enchantment with Vancouver’s natural beauty and charm gradually gave way to disillusionment as she grappled with the challenges of finding her place in the community.
Upon her arrival in 2018, Moony’s expectations of a seamless integration into Vancouver’s lifestyle were met with the harsh reality of limited job prospects and the elusive requirement of “Canadian experience” in the job market. Despite her efforts working long hours at a startup, the high cost of living and lack of a supportive network left her feeling isolated in her basement apartment.
Moony’s frustration with the city grew as she compared Vancouver’s amenities to those of her previous residences, expressing disdain for the slower pace of life and the persistent rainy weather that permeated the city. The absence of a vibrant community to connect with compounded her sense of loneliness, leading her to question where she belonged in this new environment.
Seeking solace and connection, Moony eventually left Vancouver during the pandemic for the bustling streets of London, where she found temporary refuge in the city’s energy and vitality. However, her time away from Vancouver allowed her to reflect on the inner transformation she underwent during her stay in the city. She discovered a newfound appreciation for the city’s peaceful allure and realized that Vancouver had offered her the space to introspect and grow in ways she had not anticipated.
Returning to Vancouver with a changed perspective, Moony now acknowledges the city’s imperfections and challenges but embraces the opportunity to reconnect with its essence. She expresses a desire to rekindle her relationship with Vancouver, recognizing the unique bond that has evolved between them over time. As she lands back in the city, she extends an invitation to rediscover and coexist with Vancouver, seeking a sense of belonging and acceptance in this evolving journey.
