Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw announced on Thursday that she declined an offer to direct the upcoming television series based on the “Harry Potter” franchise, citing opposition to supporting transphobia. Pankiw shared a screenshot of a text conversation on her Instagram, where she adamantly rejected the opportunity to work on the HBO show.
In her Instagram post, Pankiw emphasized her stance against funding transphobia, stating, “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia!” She clarified that the offer was for a directing role, not acting.
Having directed episodes for acclaimed series like “Black Mirror” and “Feel Good,” as well as the film “I Used to be Funny,” Pankiw’s decision to turn down the “Harry Potter” project reflects her principles.
The new series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, with streaming available on Crave in Canada. The adaptation is based on J.K. Rowling’s beloved fantasy book series, despite the author’s contentious views on transgender issues.
Rowling’s controversial remarks on gender identity have sparked backlash, including criticism from individuals associated with the “Harry Potter” franchise. Canadian filmmaker Kate Herron also shared her refusal to work on the series, echoing Pankiw’s sentiments of respect and solidarity.
While HBO’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, has not commented on the refusals from Pankiw and Herron, the directors’ principled choices have drawn attention to the ongoing debate surrounding Rowling’s views.
