A tragic incident occurred in Hungary as a passenger bus carrying Polish tourists veered off the road and overturned in a ditch, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals and injuries to several others. The bus was traveling on the eastbound lanes near Mezokeresztes on the M3 motorway, approximately 140 kilometers east of Budapest, when the accident happened around 1 a.m.
According to authorities, the bus driver is suspected to have fallen asleep, leading to the crash, and has been taken into custody. The National Directorate for Disaster Management of Hungary reported that the bus, carrying 57 passengers and two drivers, had multiple passengers trapped under the vehicle following the overturn.
All occupants of the bus were confirmed to be Polish citizens, as stated by Maciej Wewiór, a spokesperson for the Polish Foreign Ministry. The passengers were returning from a pilgrimage in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as indicated by the regional government in Rzeszow, Poland.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and acknowledged the efforts of the rescue teams deployed at the scene. Polish President Karol Nawrocki also conveyed his deep sympathy and prayers to the families and friends of the deceased individuals in the aftermath of the tragic accident.
