“Demon Hunter Band Sues Netflix Over ‘KPop Demon Hunters'”

A Christian metal band, Demon Hunter, has taken legal action against Netflix for trademark infringement over the movie “KPop Demon Hunters,” claiming that the film’s title is causing confusion with the band’s own name. The lawsuit, filed on August 18, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California by Hyde Lane Inc., the parent company of Demon Hunter, asserts that the film’s name closely resembles the band’s trademark, “Demon Hunter.”

Demon Hunter was founded by brothers Ryan Clark and Don Clark in Seattle in 2000, with Don leaving the band in 2009. The band has released 13 albums and sold the equivalent of one million albums, including streaming numbers, since its inception. Their most recent album, “There Was a Light Here,” was released in 2025.

Netflix premiered “KPop Demon Hunters” in June 2025, a film that follows members of Huntrix, a K-pop girl group who double as demon hunters. The movie has become Netflix’s most-viewed film ever, with over 325.1 million views as of March, according to the company.

Following the film’s release, Demon Hunter has received inquiries from individuals who have mistaken the band for “KPop Demon Hunters.” In February, the band’s parent company received an email requesting a refund for concert tickets from a parent who mistakenly thought they were buying tickets to a show by “KPop Demon Hunters.”

Moreover, social media users have been incorrectly using the hashtag #DemonHunter when discussing “KPop Demon Hunters.” The legal representative for Demon Hunter, John Tehranian, declined to comment on the matter. In response, Netflix stated in an email to CBC News that they intend to contest the lawsuit, asserting that the allegations are unfounded and emphasizing the global success and impact of “KPop Demon Hunters.”
