After an intense period of competition at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, the first segment of events is drawing to a close. The Corner Brook Civic Centre saw a flurry of action as ball hockey players from various parts of the province vied for top honors on Tuesday.
In a thrilling showdown, Team Mount Pearl South emerged victorious over Team Avalon with a 4-3 score in the gold medal match. Thirteen-year-old Raine Foss, hailing from Paradise, clinched the winning goal and expressed his delight at seizing the opportunity. “I passed it back to the defense, saw the opening, made my move, and scored,” Raine recounted. “Representing MPS is fantastic. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance.”
Raine’s teammate, Reid Swain, shared his excitement at departing Corner Brook with a gold medal. “We’ve been working hard for the past few months, and honestly, we weren’t sure if we could pull it off. But we did it, and it feels amazing.”
Although Team Avalon’s Ryan Walsh didn’t achieve the medal color he aimed for, he cherished the enjoyable moments he experienced in Corner Brook. “It was a blast, you know, hanging out with the guys, and all the other activities. It was all fun,” he remarked.
Team Central managed to secure the bronze medal, a feat that 14-year-old Jack Stone proudly carries back to Grand Falls-Windsor. “It’s like pure joy, you know? Going into a tournament with uncertainties and then coming home with a medal is a great feeling,” Stone expressed.
