Describing the assault as massive, Zelenskyy stated on social media that Russia had meticulously planned the operation over an extended period, combining various types of missiles and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the strike hit an industrial site in Kyiv involved in producing components for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missiles, along with other targets related to drone production and storage, an ammunition depot, and a logistics center.
As the Russian offensive unfolded in Kyiv, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command activated its military aviation operations, ground-based air defense systems, and radar reconnaissance capabilities. Additionally, Polish and other NATO military aircraft were mobilized to monitor the country’s airspace. Romania’s Defense Ministry reported that an unidentified drone crashed and caught fire near the Ukrainian border, while Spanish F-18 jets were scrambled from Romania for monitoring purposes. Moldova’s Defense Ministry also noted an unauthorized drone breaching its airspace.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighted on social media that Russia’s actions are increasingly challenging NATO and its allies, violating the sovereignty of neighboring countries and escalating risks beyond Ukraine’s borders. Despite the escalating conflict, Ukraine faces challenges in acquiring missile defense systems. An analysis by The Associated Press indicated a significant drop in the U.S. Patriot inventory, although the Pentagon maintains a substantial arsenal. Lockheed Martin has been ramping up production of PAC-3 MSE interceptors, aiming to reach an annual capacity of 2,000 by 2030.
The strikes by Russia overnight damaged residential buildings, a medical facility, and an educational institution across multiple districts in Kyiv. Emergency teams worked to rescue individuals trapped under rubble, with specific areas experiencing severe destruction, fires, and people in need of assistance. One resident, Larysa Bondaruk, recounted the chaos and devastation caused by the rocket attack, noting the loss of lives and the swift response of rescuers in the aftermath.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has attempted to retaliate by targeting Russian territory through long-range drone strikes on critical infrastructure. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 726 drones over several Russian regions, Crimea, and the Black and Azov seas, marking one of Ukraine’s most extensive aerial operations of the conflict, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties. In response, Ukraine’s military conducted strikes on Russian oil facilities in regions like Tatarstan and Krasnodar, intensifying the conflict as both sides struggle for dominance along the front line.
