In northeastern Alberta, researchers are tackling copper deficiencies in cattle by applying the mineral to wheat crops to enhance fertility and overall health. Concurrently, they are experimenting with various cover crops to determine the most effective weed suppression methods, aiming to reduce herbicide usage. Jay Cory, a farmer and chair of the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA), emphasized the inspirational aspect of research, sparking new ideas and considerations for agricultural practices.
LARA, a non-profit organization serving northeastern Alberta, conducts research at its Fort Kent research field, situated about 250 kilometers northeast of Edmonton between Bonnyville and Cold Lake. The facility hosted an event where local producers were able to explore 10 ongoing trials focusing on crop varieties and sustainable farming practices.
Maria Angelica Ouellette, a research scientist at LARA, highlighted the organization’s commitment to testing ideas under realistic conditions, taking into account factors like precipitation and temperature fluctuations. The research agenda is largely influenced by inquiries from regional farmers, with a key objective being to enhance crop sustainability and productivity on their lands.
Ongoing trials are observing the impact of excessively wet weather on crop performance this year, presenting researchers with valuable insights on varying growing season conditions. The program emphasizes a producer-led approach, prioritizing input from local farmers who possess invaluable knowledge and observations about their lands.
Alyssa Krawchuk, LARA’s executive director, emphasized the importance of tailoring research to local conditions given the diverse climatic variations across the province. The organization aims to mitigate risks for farmers by conducting unbiased local research and disseminating findings through initiatives like field tours.

Neil, Jay’s father and a founding member of LARA, underscored the personal stake farmers have in minimizing risks by utilizing research findings to inform their farming practices effectively.
