The debut Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event in Markham faced a setback at the start. The practice and qualifying sessions for the only IndyCar race in Canada were called off on Friday due to unfinished track construction, preventing final safety checks. The organizers aimed to reschedule the missed sessions into Saturday’s packed agenda.
Markham took over hosting duties from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, the event’s home since its inception in 1986. J. Douglas Boles, IndyCar president, expressed disappointment over the delay, emphasizing Ontario’s strong support for the sport evident in the turnout despite the setback.
Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo, long-time attendees from Kitchener and Waterloo, respectively, acknowledged the necessity of ensuring track safety but lamented the absence of on-track action, which draws fans to the event.
The shift from Toronto to Markham was announced last September, with the new circuit spanning Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Notable incomplete features included a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments for marshals.
The government investments of $1.5 million provincially and $3.5 million federally, along with Markham’s $12 million capital spending, underscored the significant financial backing for the race. Spectators enjoyed free entry on Fridays, with donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation encouraged.
Despite challenges like limited shade and seating options, off-track activities proceeded as planned. Saturday promised a full day of racing, including practice sessions, qualifying rounds, and races by other series on the road course.
IndyCar officials expressed confidence in the circuit’s potential and thanked Markham for its support in creating a dynamic race layout. With various races scheduled for the weekend, fans anticipated an action-packed event despite the initial hiccups.
