Search teams have discovered the body of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering group that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago, as confirmed by a mountaineering official and local authorities. Geis’s remains were located by a team of local volunteers, led by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural attempt to scale an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
Residing in San Antonio, Texas, Geis, aged 39, had shared on social media earlier this year her decision to shut down her Pilates studio and embark on a new journey filled with uncertainty. Her family described her as a radiant presence who was cherished deeply by her loved ones and friends.
The search, initiated on July 31 following the tragic incident that engulfed the group led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja in an avalanche on Broad Peak, has now come to a close. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier from Nepal, made headlines in 2019 by conquering the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record-breaking 189 days, a feat showcased in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” Despite his record being surpassed in 2023, Purja remains a prominent figure in the mountaineering community.
