“Deportation Flight Video Sparks Outcry”

A video released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) depicting men in restraints boarding a deportation flight to Haiti has sparked controversy. Critics accuse the U.S. government of instilling fear in Haitian communities as deportations to the violence-stricken nation increase.

The footage, shared on social media, shows several Black men being escorted onto a plane with their hands and feet bound. The post accompanying the video stated that individuals with terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) are in the U.S. illegally and must either leave immediately or face deportation.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to proceed with ending TPS for Haitians, affecting over 300,000 individuals. This decision went into effect in late July.

According to the Florida Democratic Party, the termination of TPS for Haitian families and their subsequent repatriation is deemed as a cruel policy rather than a show of strength. Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari also condemned the DHS video, labeling it as one of the worst actions by the Trump administration.

The situation in Haiti remains dire, with heightened gang violence following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. The country is plagued by insecurity and internal displacement due to gang-related violence.

Efforts to speed up deportations to Haiti have been reported, with plans to increase deportation flights from one per month to one per week following the TPS cancellation. The Department of Homeland Security declined to disclose details about the recent deportation flight for operational security reasons.

The Haitian Bridge Alliance, a group aiding Haitian immigrants in the U.S., expressed concerns over the deportation of individuals who had lost TPS status, highlighting the widespread fear within Haitian communities across the country.
