“Residents Demand Action on Hazardous Highway 41”

Residents in two communities in southwestern Manitoba are voicing their frustrations over the hazardous conditions of Highway 41 due to extensive potholes and deteriorating pavement sections. The highway, located in the rural municipality of Ellice-Archie northwest of Brandon, serves as a crucial link from the Trans-Canada Highway to the Yellowhead Highway, connecting McAuley, St-Lazare, and Binscarth.

Ellice-Archie Reeve Barry Lowes described the road as “terribly dangerous,” recounting an incident where he damaged his truck’s rim near McAuley while on his way to his granddaughter’s graduation. The road conditions have been a persistent problem for over a decade, with significant damage caused by flooding in 2011 and 2014.

Despite the long-standing issues, the highway remains heavily used by farmers, truckers, and campers. Lowes emphasized the severity of the road’s condition, mentioning the presence of numerous potholes and missing pavement sections marked with pink and white paint. One particularly problematic area, located 15 kilometers south of McAuley, features broken pavement and holes in both lanes.

Lowes expressed frustration with the lack of action from the government, stating that he has repeatedly urged the NDP administration to repave the road. While maintenance crews are currently working on temporary repairs, Lowes highlighted the need for a comprehensive solution to address the road’s deteriorating state.

In St-Lazare, business owner Dolores Fouillard echoed concerns about the road’s safety, emphasizing the need for a permanent fix rather than temporary patches. With increasing traffic flow, including commuters heading to a nearby potash mine in Rocanville, Saskatchewan, Fouillard stressed the urgency of addressing the road’s deteriorating condition.

As stakeholders await further developments, residents continue to advocate for substantial repairs to ensure the safety of all road users, especially with the upcoming school year raising concerns about children commuting on the damaged highway.
