IMF Forecasts 3.1% Global Economic Growth in 2026

The latest Economic Outlook from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects a 3.1 percent growth rate for the global economy in 2026, slightly higher than the previously forecasted three percent. However, the report also highlights increasing risks posed by escalating debt levels, particularly in light of the surge in artificial intelligence (AI) investments.

According to the IMF, the global economy is expected to witness a rebound to 3.4 percent growth in 2027 after a 3.5 percent expansion in 2025. The report, unveiled during the fall meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Bangkok, foresees steady growth of 2.3 percent in the United States for 2026 and 2027.

Advanced economies collectively are projected to grow by 2.1 percent this year, up from two percent in 2025, before slowing to 1.9 percent growth in the following year. The forecasts are underpinned by assumptions of a substantial increase in oil prices and a subsequent decline in global inflation rates.

The rise of AI technology is identified as a key driver offsetting the impact of soaring energy prices, although it introduces its own set of risks. The uneven distribution of AI benefits is emphasized, with the U.S. and China accounting for a significant portion of demand for AI-related equipment.

As highlighted by Silvana Tenreyro, the IMF’s research director, the global economic landscape is witnessing a significant concentration of growth in a limited number of countries. The report indicates a shift in growth patterns driven by war-induced supply shocks and the robust demand for AI-related products.

In addition to AI-related market corrections, other evolving risks include escalating bond yields and cyber threats that could disrupt financial systems. Concerns over AI’s effects on employment are also raised, with IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva warning of significant job impacts globally.

Debt accumulation remains a central concern, with the IMF urging countries to strengthen fiscal discipline and address rising debt levels amid heightened borrowing costs. The report highlights varying growth trajectories for economies based on their exposure to energy shocks and AI adoption rates.

Notably, the eurozone countries are expected to experience modest growth rates, while China’s economy is projected to expand by 4.5 percent in 2026. India retains its position as the fastest-growing major economy, with a forecasted growth rate of seven percent.

The IMF, a global financial institution dedicated to fostering economic growth and stability, convened in Bangkok to assess the world economy’s status and strategize ways to enhance financial stability and sustainable growth.
