The Chief of Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation, Kele Antoine, expressed deep concern over the impact of a recent shooting incident in Fort Simpson, N.W.T., which resulted in one person being injured. Antoine emphasized the tight-knit nature of the small community, stating that events like these resonate across families and individuals due to the interconnectedness within the town.
Antoine is calling on residents with any relevant information about the shooting to step forward, highlighting the importance of community involvement in aiding law enforcement efforts. He stressed that collaborative action is essential, noting that authorities cannot address such incidents in isolation.
According to a statement released by the RCMP on Friday, they received reports of a man being shot in a residential backyard around 1:40 a.m. Responding officers discovered the injured individual, who was subsequently treated at a local health facility before being transferred to Yellowknife for further medical attention.
Authorities indicated that the shooting appeared to be targeted and assured the public that there is no immediate danger to the community. While Antoine suggested a possible link to drug activity, the RCMP has not confirmed this speculation.
In addition, Antoine emphasized the need for sustained funding and adequate resources for local law enforcement to effectively combat violence and address issues related to the drug trade in the community. He underscored the importance of a consistent, long-term strategy rather than temporary measures in response to specific incidents.
