In Naujaat, Nunavut, a recent fire has caused damage to construction materials designated for a public housing project in the community. The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) stated that it is currently unclear if this incident will impact the project’s timeline. The fire occurred near the hamlet’s waterfront on Wednesday evening and was promptly attended to by the local fire department, as confirmed by Naujaat’s senior administrative officer Chantal Pelletier.
The NHC mentioned that the construction materials were originally allocated for an eight-unit public housing initiative. A spokesperson from the corporation stated that they are awaiting the fire chief’s report and collaborating with the project contractor and local authorities to evaluate the extent of the destruction. The completion date for the eight-plex is set for June 2027, and it remains uncertain how the fire will influence this timeline.
Regarding the cause of the fire, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spokesperson mentioned that they currently have no details to share or confirm if an investigation is underway.
