“Comedians Struggle After SiriusXM Drops Raw Comedy Channel”

Comedian Liz Miele and many other comedians have recently faced a significant financial blow due to SiriusXM’s decision to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel. This channel, which previously showcased over 800 comedians on a rotational basis, has been replaced by a new channel owned by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

The removal of the Raw Comedy channel has resulted in a loss of income and exposure for Miele and numerous working-class comedians. The transition has favored established celebrity comics, leaving many struggling comedians without a vital platform for financial support and visibility.

Miele expressed how SiriusXM was crucial for her financial stability in the past year, supporting not only herself but also fellow comedians facing various personal challenges. The abrupt change has left many in a precarious financial situation, with limited opportunities to earn royalties and gain recognition.

While Maniscalco and SiriusXM have pledged to provide opportunities for comedians at different career stages on the new channel, industry reports suggest a different reality. Prior to the switch, Raw Comedy featured a broad array of comedians, each earning royalties for their performances. However, the revamped channel now predominantly features a select group of top artists, including well-known names like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart.

The drastic reduction in the number of comedians featured on the new channel has raised concerns about wealth concentration within the industry. Miele, a former top performer on the channel, highlighted the shift towards a small group of comedians reaping substantial financial benefits, while many others struggle to make ends meet.

Comedians like Toronto-based Danish Anwar have reported a significant drop in income following the channel change. Anwar emphasized the financial impact on comedians who relied on SiriusXM royalties to sustain their careers, including those needing the income to maintain work visas.

Despite calls from prominent comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf for Maniscalco to support emerging comedians, the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy was attributed to SiriusXM based on performance metrics. Maniscalco has committed to offering a platform for diverse voices in comedy, but some comedians remain skeptical until concrete actions are taken to support the affected individuals.

The situation has sparked discussions within the comedy community about solidarity and the need for fair treatment and compensation. While the future remains uncertain for many comedians impacted by the channel change, there is hope for collective action to address industry challenges and advocate for the rights of comedians facing financial hardship.
