Jean St-Amand noted that some locals had posted on social media about the situation before the official alert was issued, causing concern among those who noticed the heightened police activity.
On Saturday, an emergency alert was issued to residents in Bedford, N.S., advising them to secure their homes as law enforcement searched for the suspect following a shooting incident in the Annapolis Valley. Subsequently, a broader alert was sent out 30 minutes later. The man, identified as Ryan Alexander Cole, 36, was apprehended. Cole made a brief court appearance in Digby provincial court on Monday, with his case adjourned to August 25 while he remains in custody.
St-Amand expressed the need for a post-incident assessment with the city’s chief administrative officer to review the sequence of events related to the emergency alert on Saturday. He emphasized the importance of understanding the coordination between the alert system and on-scene officers, acknowledging that local awareness often precedes official alerts.
Police responded to reports of a woman being shot in the Annapolis Valley on Saturday, with the suspect fleeing in a damaged Mazda sedan towards Halifax. The suspect abandoned the vehicle after attempting to drive along a hiking trail near Sunnyside Mall in Bedford. Corporal Mandy Edwards of the RCMP explained that alert dissemination is based on various factors, with the initial localized alert expanding to encompass the entire Halifax Regional Municipality after the suspect was not found.
Edwards highlighted the purpose of alerts to inform and provide guidance when necessary, noting limitations in character space for detailed descriptions within the alerts. She mentioned the use of social media and traditional news releases as additional communication channels utilized by the police.
