“Cut Heating Costs by £65 Annually with Boiler Adjustments”

If you adjust your boiler settings, you could potentially save around £65 annually on heating expenses, according to insights shared by Octopus Energy. This recommendation is part of their energy-saving tips aimed at assisting individuals dealing with increased energy bills.

Octopus Energy’s guidance highlights the importance of reducing the flow setting control on your boiler as a practical method to cut costs. Typically, this control regulates the temperature of the water leaving the boiler, which is often preset at a high level.

The company explains, “Before making any adjustments, identify the type of boiler you have. If it is a system boiler with a hot water cylinder, rather than a combi boiler, this advice may not be applicable.

“By lowering the flow temperature, which is the temperature at which the boiler heats water for circulation through radiators, you can achieve energy savings. The default setting of around 70 to 80 degrees can be reduced slightly without compromising the warmth of your home, potentially resulting in annual savings of up to £65.”

It is crucial to recognize that the flow temperature of a boiler differs significantly from the thermostat setting. For instance, setting the thermostat to 15°C means the boiler will heat the water to a higher temperature to reach the desired room temperature.

Research from Which? indicates that most boilers are typically set between 75 and 80°C for flow temperature. Lowering this setting can enhance energy efficiency while still effectively heating your home.

The actual savings from this adjustment will vary depending on factors like insulation quality in your home. Which? notes, “Reducing the flow temperature may delay reaching desired room temperatures, but with adequate insulation, your boiler will operate more efficiently, leading to cost savings.”

For homes with poor insulation or undersized radiators, the benefits of lowering flow temperatures might be limited. In such cases, the heating system may struggle to perform optimally.

If unsure about your home’s insulation or radiator sizing, Which? recommends scheduling a boiler service for personalized advice on adjusting flow temperatures to suit your home’s specifications.

Nesta, known for the Money Saving Boiler Challenge, provides an online test to evaluate flow temperature options quickly. This brief assessment can help users determine potential savings with minimal effort.
