British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has returned to England following a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of two individuals. Joshua arrived at London Stansted Airport on Friday night and was then taken to his residence for further recovery, according to reports. The funeral for his late friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, is scheduled to take place at a London mosque tomorrow, where family and friends are expected to attend a ‘janaza prayer service’.
There is uncertainty surrounding Joshua’s attendance at the funeral amid concerns that his presence could create a spectacle. Joshua narrowly escaped the fatal accident by switching seats just before the journey that resulted in the loss of his friends’ lives. While the boxer sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment, the driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Kayode’s lawyer has stated that the incident was an accident, with the driver pleading not guilty and claiming brake failure as a contributing factor.
The car collision occurred when Kayode was driving Joshua and his friends in a black Lexus Jeep on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, colliding with a stationary truck. Following his discharge from the hospital, Kayode was questioned and provided an official statement regarding the events leading up to the accident, with his trial adjourned until January 20. Joshua, after being discharged from the hospital, paid his respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home in Lagos before their bodies were repatriated to the United Kingdom.
