A Food Basics store will replace a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys neighborhood this fall, resulting in job losses for numerous employees. Metro Inc. stated that the closure of the store on Wednesday is part of the transition to a Food Basics to better align with local market conditions and customer preferences.
Justin Braganza, a meat cutter with over 30 years of experience at the Southgate location, expressed shock over the sudden announcement of the store’s closure in May. The decision was attributed to financial pressures, including increased rent and concerns about the store’s profitability under the Metro model.
Although Metro indicated that the change was driven by market dynamics, employees like Braganza are facing uncertainty about their future employment. The collective agreement states that affected workers cannot transfer to other Metro stores but can apply for positions at the new Food Basics store, where a minimum number of former Southgate Metro employees will be hired based on seniority considerations within the different pay structure.
The move has left employees like Braganza feeling uncertain about their prospects, especially considering the lack of suitable positions at Food Basics for certain roles. The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated for enhanced options, including severance benefits and job opportunities at the new store, for affected members to mitigate the impact of the closure.
Legal experts have noted that the collective agreement allows for layoffs due to work shortages, raising questions about the rebranding of the store as Food Basics and potential implications for employee rights. While union grievances or legal challenges are possible, negotiations and settlements between the parties may lead to confidential agreements without public disclosure of details.
