“Michael J. Fox Elevated to Companion in Order of Canada”

Celebrated actor and Parkinson’s disease advocate Michael J. Fox expressed feelings of “pride” and “humility” as he received an elevation within the Order of Canada on Friday. At Rideau Hall, spectators gave Fox a standing ovation as Governor General Louise Arbour officially bestowed upon him the title of companion within the Order of Canada.

The decision to elevate Fox to companion status was in recognition of his impactful global advocacy and unwavering openness about Parkinson’s disease. Reflecting on the ceremony, Fox shared his deep connection to Canada and its values, highlighting his love for Canadian music and content, shaping his uniquely Canadian identity.

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative nervous system condition characterized by tremors, stiffness, and slowness, often accompanied by depression and memory issues. Since publicly disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, Fox has been actively involved in fundraising for Parkinson’s research and candidly sharing his experiences to shed light on the challenges faced by individuals living with the disease.

Fox acknowledged Canada’s significant contributions to Parkinson’s research, particularly in pioneering advancements like deep brain stimulation. He was among the 51 individuals recognized within the Order of Canada during the ceremony. Governor General Arbour commended each honoree for their excellence and dedication to serving others, emphasizing the importance of using talents and influence to benefit the community.

The ceremony also honored other notable figures, including mechanical engineering professor Yusuf Altintas and pediatric neuro-oncology expert Nada Jabado, both inducted as officers of the Order of Canada. Former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz was recognized for his contributions to international trade and economic prosperity. Sculptor Ruth Elsie Abernethy, known for her impactful bronze sculptures exploring themes of gender and heritage, was inducted as a member.

Additionally, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Susanne Craig was honored for her exceptional work with prominent media outlets. Colin Roswell Clarke, Marcelle Dubois, and Patrick Joseph Lahey were also inducted as members for their significant contributions in the arts, playwriting, and marine exploration, respectively.

The ceremony concluded with Arbour highlighting Fox as a shining example of using courage and determination to drive sustainable progress, making a reference to Fox’s renowned role in the “Back to the Future” film series.
