Mother from Ukraine loses daughter in Bondi Beach attack

A mother from Ukraine, who thought she had secured her son’s safety by relocating from the war-torn country, tragically lost her daughter in the violent incident at Bondi Beach. Valentyna, the mother of 10-year-old Matilda Poltavchenko, decided to make Australia their new home following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Despite believing that her family was out of harm’s way, the devastating reality hit when Matilda became one of the victims in the Bondi Beach attack, which authorities suspect was motivated by ISIS ideology and antisemitism.

In an emotional public appearance, the grieving mother shared her initial happiness upon arriving in Australia, relieved that her son was safe from the conflict back home. However, her world crumbled as she expressed anguish over the senseless shooting that claimed her daughter’s life. The heartbroken mother condemned the perpetrators for their monstrous actions, recounting the horrific scene of a little girl being targeted while seeking refuge with her father.

Authorities have named Naveed Akram, 24, and his deceased father Sajid as the individuals responsible for the violent attack. Naveed faces numerous charges, including multiple counts of murder and committing a terrorist act. Despite sustaining critical injuries during the police confrontation, he is now under custody and will undergo legal proceedings once he is fit for questioning in 2026.

The tragic incident at Bondi Beach resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals, with Matilda and Rabbi Eli Schlanger among the identified victims. The community continues to mourn the loss of innocent lives in this senseless act of violence.
