Rory McIlroy is currently enjoying a brief respite at his newly acquired residence in the UK before heading off to participate in the US Open. Ranked as the world No. 2, McIlroy recently competed in the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, where he secured a tie for 12th place.
After scoring four under par at the Memorial Tournament in preparation for the third major event of the year, McIlroy decided to skip the Canadian Open and return to his new home in England. The golfer covered a distance of 3,650 miles from Dublin, Ohio to Wentworth to settle into his new abode on the exclusive Surrey estate. Following a six-day stay in his mansion, he will then embark on another approximately 3,500-mile journey to Southampton, New York, for the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
Opting to spend quality time at his family home, McIlroy forfeited the chance to participate in the Canadian Open, which offers a total prize pool of £7.3 million, with the winner set to claim the £1.3 million top reward.
“I had a couple of weeks off and we got ourselves settled into our house in London for the summer. It was nice to be there for the last 10 days,” McIlroy expressed before the Memorial Tournament.
Purchased in 2023, the £9 million residence was already a standout property in the area before McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, commenced renovations on the six-bedroom mansion. The couple, along with their daughter Poppy, made the move from Florida to the UK.
Previously living in a lavish £16.5 million mansion in Jupiter, Florida, since their acquisition of the property from golf icon Ernie Els in 2017, McIlroy and Stoll now find themselves in the company of high-profile neighbors such as Elton John and Cliff Richard, with the Sultan of Brunei boasting an astounding net worth of £22.3 billion.
Reflecting on his performance at the Memorial Tournament, McIlroy acknowledged struggling with driver consistency throughout the season but remains optimistic about his prospects at the upcoming US Open.
Looking ahead to the US Open at Shinnecock Hills after successfully defending his Masters title in April, McIlroy aims to continually improve his game. “Just try to keep getting a little bit better each and every day heading into Shinnecock,” he remarked.
