Thailand carried out airstrikes along the disputed border with Cambodia on Monday, effectively nullifying the peace agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump just weeks earlier. The two countries accused each other of violating a ceasefire that had temporarily halted hostilities following a conflict in July that resulted in casualties on both sides.
According to Thailand’s defense ministry, over 35,000 individuals evacuated border areas to seek refuge in emergency shelters, with additional people finding safety with relatives. Cambodia’s Information Minister confirmed the relocation of residents from multiple border villages to secure locations.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized in a televised speech the country’s commitment to taking necessary military action to protect national security and public safety. He reiterated Thailand’s stance of not instigating violence but standing firm against any threats to its sovereignty.
Tensions escalated in early November when Thai soldiers were injured by landmines, leading Thailand to suspend the ceasefire indefinitely. Despite efforts to cooperate in clearing landmines, both nations continued to blame each other for the situation.
In a recent development, a brief exchange of fire erupted on the border, with conflicting reports on who initiated the conflict. Thai military officials claimed that Cambodian forces wounded Thai soldiers, prompting a retaliatory response. Cambodia refuted these claims, stating they acted in self-restraint.
As the situation unfolded, Malaysia’s Prime Minister called for calm and expressed readiness to support peace efforts to prevent further escalation. The historical animosity between Thailand and Cambodia, stemming from past conflicts and territorial disputes, has persisted over the years without a definitive resolution on border demarcation.
The current ceasefire lacks a clear path to address the underlying issue of border delineation, rooted in historical disagreements over territorial boundaries. The ongoing clashes highlight the complex and enduring nature of the conflict between the two neighboring nations.
