Jannik Sinner, currently ranked as the top men’s tennis player globally, has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury. The Italian star, who last competed at Wimbledon where he secured his second consecutive title, also opted out of the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. Sinner, aged 24, boasts five Grand Slam victories and aims to clinch the French Open to achieve the coveted career Grand Slam.
In a statement relayed by tournament officials, Sinner revealed, “After consulting with my medical team, I regret to announce my withdrawal from the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati. Despite intensive efforts, my right knee remains problematic, and I acknowledge that I am not yet fit to compete. I am deeply disappointed to miss out on Cincinnati and am looking forward to returning next year, focusing now on preparing for the U.S. Open.”
This news comes shortly after Carlos Alcaraz also withdrew from the Cincinnati tournament due to a persistent wrist injury. Consequently, fans at the event will miss the opportunity to watch the top two men’s players in action.
Notably, Sinner triumphed in Cincinnati two years ago, followed by a subsequent victory at the U.S. Open. However, Alcaraz claimed the U.S. Open title last year, defeating Sinner in a four-set final. The 23-year-old Spaniard is set to defend his championship when the tournament kicks off on August 30.
