Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud dad living in Toronto, shared his experience of unexpectedly entering an international whistling contest. Initially signing up for fun with his daughter, Sumire, they found themselves making audition tapes and eventually getting selected for the Masters of Musical Whistling competition held in Los Angeles.
Despite their casual approach, they soon realized the seriousness of the competition through a coaching session with Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. With dedicated practice and preparation, they found themselves standing on stage alongside remarkably talented contestants from around the world.
Sumire impressed the audience with her rendition of the Japanese cartoon theme from Doraemon, winning silver in the kids’ category. Ben showcased his skills with “It’s Not a Moon,” winning gold in the level one adults’ category. This unexpected success made Ben reflect on his journey from a ’90s teen with a shield of irony to a proud participant in a genuine competition.
The experience taught him the value of embracing authenticity and passion, even if it may seem silly to others. Through their journey at the Masters of Musical Whistling, Ben and Sumire discovered the joy of pursuing something they truly cared about, setting aside their ironic facades for a moment of genuine achievement.
