Charlton Athletic has announced the unfortunate passing of a fan following a medical emergency at their match against Portsmouth. The incident led to a temporary suspension of the game at The Valley after 12 minutes, when spectators alerted officials and players.
Emergency medical care was promptly provided, leading to the eventual abandonment of the match approximately 45 minutes later. The Championship club has issued a statement confirming the fan’s tragic death.
In their statement, Charlton Athletic expressed deep sorrow, stating, “The club is saddened to report the death of a supporter who experienced a medical emergency during today’s match at The Valley against Portsmouth.”
The statement further explained the match interruption in the 12th minute for the fan’s treatment, which later led to the game’s postponement. The club extended gratitude to the Charlton staff and first responders for their efforts, although the supporter passed away in the hospital.
Acknowledging the patience and understanding shown by supporters in attendance and the Portsmouth team during the unfolding tragedy, the club conveyed heartfelt condolences to the fan’s family and friends in this challenging time.
Portsmouth, the opposing team, also expressed their devastation, stating, “Portsmouth Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of the Charlton supporter who fell ill during today’s game. Our thoughts and sympathies are with their loved ones.”
The match, tied at 0-0 when abandoned, will be rescheduled for a future date.
