U.S. President Donald Trump declared on social media Wednesday his intention to initiate what he termed as “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER UNDERTAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” Describing it as Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unparalleled level, Trump provided scant details in a post on Truth Social.
He cautioned of economic repercussions for any nation supporting Tehran or extending assistance to Iran. Trump emphasized that any country permitting its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to aid Iran would face significant Economic Consequences. While not specifying the exact measures the U.S. would take against such countries, Trump urged an immediate halt to activities like oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies, stating, “You know who you are.”
The ongoing conflict in which thousands have lost their lives has drawn in various Gulf countries over the past six months. Iran’s influence over shipping routes, particularly through the crucial Strait of Hormuz responsible for a substantial portion of global oil trade, has rattled global markets.
Despite two ceasefire agreements between the U.S. and Iran in April and June aimed at restoring shipping flow through Hormuz to pre-war levels, these efforts quickly collapsed. Trump’s statements on social media, though impactful, are not always followed through to completion.
Regarding U.S.-Iran relations, conflicting reports emerged. The United Arab Emirates, home to a significant U.S. military presence, announced the suspension of all trade activities with Iran following reports of missiles launched from Iran that were later dismissed by Iran as baseless. China, a major buyer of Iran’s oil, poses a challenge for the U.S. in escalating economic pressure due to its role as a primary exporter of essential rare-earth minerals to the U.S.
Iran continues to express openness to dialogue with the U.S., with an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader emphasizing that military pressure and sanctions will not weaken Iran’s resolve. While Trump denied ongoing talks with Iran, his son-in-law and special envoy, Jared Kushner, indicated that discussions with Iran were active and possibly more robust than ever.
