The White House had initially announced that Trump was traveling on Air Force One from Turkey to Britain after attending a NATO summit. However, moments after boarding Air Force One, Trump secretly transferred to another aircraft for the continuation of his journey to Britain, as reported by the Washington Post, citing undisclosed sources.
Trump acknowledged the sequence of events, stating that the Secret Service and military advised him to change planes in light of a security threat, which he claimed did not intimidate him. Trump minimized the perceived risk to the individuals who remained on the initial plane, including White House officials, security personnel, and reporters. He explained to reporters upon his return from an event in Ohio that he was instructed to board a different plane due to a threat, emphasizing that he did not inquire extensively about the nature of the threat, as he frequently receives various threats.
The decision for Trump to switch planes raised security concerns, especially after he had utilized a newly renovated jet donated by Qatar for his trip to the NATO summit in Ankara. Trump’s impromptu switch to an older Air Force One while leaving Turkey sparked inquiries regarding the security of the newer plane. The incident occurred amidst rising tensions with Iran, a neighboring country of Turkey.
Before departing Ankara, Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he would opt for an older baby blue Air Force One aircraft for the journey to RAF Mildenhall in Britain, while the new plane halted at the same base to allow U.S. service members stationed there to tour the aircraft. Journalists who believed they were accompanying Trump on the older Air Force One, which served as a diversion, were instructed to keep their window shades closed in the press cabin. Some White House staff members also mistakenly believed that Trump was on the older aircraft.
When questioned by reporters about the need to keep the window shades closed during the flight, Trump suggested it was due to potential dangers. He quipped, “But if I go, you go. Right?”
