An urgent warning has been issued to all Android and iPhone users regarding the dangers of using unofficial chargers. With many new devices now excluding chargers from their packaging, consumers often seek cheaper alternatives online. However, consumer advocacy group Which? has raised concerns about the safety of these discounted chargers.
Which? conducted tests on various chargers purchased from online platforms like Amazon, eBay, and others, revealing alarming results. Some chargers were found to have poor manufacturing standards, posing risks of electric shock, fire, or explosions. One charger even imitated an Apple product but failed safety tests as a counterfeit item.
This investigation highlights the prevalence of unsafe electrical products on online marketplaces. Sue Davies from Which? emphasized the severe consequences of using poorly designed electrical products, urging the government to strengthen product safety laws for online retailers.
In response to these findings, Amazon and B&Q emphasized their commitment to customer safety. Amazon stated that all products on its platform must comply with regulations and that the identified chargers have been removed. B&Q also assured proactive safety checks on their Marketplace platform.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from reputable retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to avoid potential safety hazards associated with cheaper alternatives. While these products may be more expensive, experts warn that the risks outweigh the cost savings.
