Scotland Set for Arctic Blast and Snowfall Ahead of Christmas

Parts of the country are expected to face cold weather and potential snowfall in the coming days. Despite winter beginning recently, certain regions may experience an Arctic blast bringing freezing temperatures and snow before the holiday season. Weather experts have identified areas in Scotland that could encounter snowy conditions within the next two weeks.

Specifically, parts of Scotland are likely to witness their initial snowflakes during an Arctic cold front on December 16, just prior to Christmas. Forecasts from WXCharts indicate snowfall in the highlands around midnight on the aforementioned date.

Additionally, a temperature map from Ventusky shows a significant drop in temperatures around midnight on December 16, with “feels like temperatures” falling below 0C across the UK, turning the map predominantly blue. The forecast suggests that regions in the Highlands could experience “feels like temperatures” as low as -6C on that particular night.

Moreover, according to GFS model maps, snowfall originating from Scotland is anticipated to move southward. The snow showers are projected to impact Northern Ireland, Wales, and parts of northern England. The forecast suggests that snow could commence in Scotland during the early hours of December 15, with the heaviest snowfall expected in southern Scotland’s Galloway Forest Park, the Lake District, and the Pennines in northern England by 9 am.

Lighter snowfall is also forecasted for Northern Ireland and heavy snowfall in North Wales, particularly in Snowdonia, by 3 pm on December 15. The Met Office has indicated a varied weather outlook for the upcoming week, with showers, rain, and wind anticipated in different regions of the country.

Between December 8 and 17, the Met Office anticipates unsettled conditions to persist, with showers, rain, and strong winds affecting all areas. The weather agency predicts a mix of sunshine, showers, and potential very strong winds moving eastward or northeastward across the country. Temperatures are expected to be around average levels, with a cool feel due to wind and rain, while minimal frost, fog, and snow are expected during this unsettled period.
