A married couple who were subjected to brutal torture and encased in cement shared a poignant final social media post that now carries a chilling significance. Roman Novak, a convicted cryptocurrency scammer aged 38, and his wife Anna, 37, relocated to Dubai seeking a fresh start, only to meet a tragic end together.
Originally from Saint Petersburg, Roman was the creator of Fintopio, a cryptocurrency platform that abruptly shut down, leaving its users without access to their funds, including many in the Middle East and various parts of the world.
Reports from Russian authorities indicate that the couple, known for flaunting their opulent lifestyle of luxury cars and private jets, were abducted as part of an extortion scheme to gain access to Roman’s cryptocurrency accounts. However, in light of recent events, Roman’s final Instagram post referring to his wife as the ‘plot twist’ he ‘never deserved’ takes on a much darker meaning following their demise.
After their disappearance, it surfaced that the last photo of the couple together was posted on social media in May. In the post, the billionaire expressed his love for his wife on their anniversary while they were in Rome, revisiting the Trevi fountain where they had been nine years earlier.
Celebrating their 17 years together, the couple joyfully revisited the same spot, with Roman’s post stating, “9 years since we threw a coin in this fountain. And guess what… we came back. Like a sequel. With better outfits and the same love (plus a lot of grey hairs). She still looks at me like I’m the main character. I still look at her like she’s the plot twist I never deserved.” Little did they know that a few months later, they would meet a tragic end, subjected to torture in the desert.
According to Russian media reports, the couple was held captive and tortured simultaneously as their captors demanded the password to Roman’s crypto wallet. When the codes were provided, it was discovered that the accounts were empty. “Novak didn’t resist – but there was no cryptocurrency left. The wallet was empty,” as stated by Fontanka news outlet.
Allegedly, the couple failed to secure a ransom from elsewhere, leading to their tragic fate. “Roman and Anna were killed and then dismembered. Emirati police found traces of Anna Novak’s blood at the villa, blood in the rented car, a cache of knives near the crime scene, and one of the organizers’ T-shirts left behind in haste,” the outlet reported.
In connection with the double murder, three individuals have been apprehended in Saint Petersburg. Previous social media posts depicted the couple enjoying extravagant vacations to destinations like Italy and Disneyland, showcasing luxury yachts, fast cars, and private jets. In a post from last year, Roman shared a selfie with his wife, stating, “Feels like this is just the beginning, though I’ve loved you for a million years.”
