“UK TV Licence Fee to Increase to £180 in April”

The TV licence fee is set to increase again starting this April, with certain individuals eligible for a free or discounted licence. Currently priced at £174.50 annually, the fee will go up by £5.50 to reach £180 in April. A TV licence is mandatory for viewing or recording live TV, or accessing content on BBC iPlayer.

If you solely watch on-demand shows via non-BBC iPlayer streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, a TV licence is not required. However, tuning into live broadcasts through these platforms necessitates a TV licence, and failure to comply could result in a fine of up to £1,000.

Individuals exempt from needing a TV licence can declare their status on the TV Licensing website. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport emphasizes the government’s commitment to maintaining a sustainable and fair funding model for the BBC, ensuring accessibility and support for households facing financial challenges.

Free TV licences are available for individuals over 75 receiving Pension Credit, with reduced fees for care home residents and visually impaired persons. Certain groups, such as students living away from home and those in residential care or sheltered accommodation, may also qualify for discounted or concessionary TV licences.
