“Channel 4 Secures TV Rights for Historic Boat Race”

The Boat Race, a historic event between Oxford University and Cambridge University on the Thames, will not be broadcast on the BBC for the first time in almost a century. Channel 4 secured the TV rights for the competition in a five-year agreement, while Times Radio will cover the radio broadcast until 2028.

Since the mid-1920s, the BBC has been the traditional broadcaster of the Boat Race, airing it on radio and television. However, this year’s race, scheduled for April 4, will be available on different platforms due to the change in broadcasting rights.

Despite previous interruptions in the BBC’s coverage, such as ITV showing the race from 2005 to 2009 and LBC holding radio rights from 2005 to 2010, this marks the first time the BBC will not air the Boat Race in any form. The decision came after reports that the BBC’s director of sport had reservations about the event being perceived as ‘elitist.’

With declining viewership and rising production costs, the BBC has shifted its focus away from live sports coverage under its new leadership. Times Radio, the new radio partner for the Boat Race, will promote the event across News UK’s network as part of the agreement.

Siobhan Cassidy, Chair of The Boat Race Company, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Times Radio, emphasizing shared values of heritage, tradition, precision, and quality. The upcoming Boat Race on April 4 will mark the beginning of this multi-year collaboration.

The changing media landscape and evolving audience preferences have influenced the BBC’s strategic decisions regarding sports coverage. The broadcaster aims to stay relevant and engage audiences through various content formats, recognizing the shift towards digital platforms for consuming sports content.
