Experts are cautioning that Brits may be at risk of not adequately safeguarding themselves against the flu in time for the Christmas season. The UK is facing the possibility of its most severe flu season yet, with hospitals such as Queen Elizabeth near Selly Oak, Birmingham, already declaring critical incidents due to the surge in cases. Some hospitals have implemented face mask mandates and visitor restrictions.
To avoid the need for hospital care, the public is advised to take preventative measures, as the number of hospital beds occupied by flu-infected patients in England is currently higher than usual for this time of year. Pharmacist Deborah Grayson emphasized the importance of avoiding crowded places like shops, offices, and festive gatherings.
Although the flu vaccine is available, it takes two weeks to take full effect. The predominant flu strain contributing to the increase in cases is the mutated H3N2 subclade K, believed to be highly contagious.
Ms. Grayson, known as the “Godmother of Pharmacology,” recommended using Vicks First Defence Nasal Spray to prevent severe illness by trapping the virus in the nose. Additionally, she highlighted the significance of maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D, especially during winter when sunlight exposure is limited.
Zinc, essential for immune function, can aid in fighting off illnesses like colds and flu. Foods rich in zinc such as oysters, red meat, and seeds can provide a beneficial boost. Adequate sleep, a balanced diet, and supplements like immune-enhancing formulas can help bolster the body’s defenses against viruses.
As the holiday season approaches, it is crucial to prioritize health and immunity to minimize the risk of falling ill. Following these recommendations can contribute to a healthier and more enjoyable festive period.
