Therapist Sentenced for Abusing Female Patients

A psychotherapist described as “calculated” has been sentenced to prison for committing abusive acts against female patients under the guise of providing medical treatment. Tarkan Mustafa, a therapist based in North London, was found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault, including inappropriate touching and sexual advances, following a trial at Wood Green Crown Court.

Mustafa, aged 55 and residing in Southgate, was handed a jail term of three years and nine months for his offenses. The incidents took place at his therapy practice, Peace of Mind, where he exploited vulnerable women seeking his support for his own sexual satisfaction.

The case against Mustafa, which had initially been closed for nine years due to insufficient evidence, was reopened after new reports surfaced. The Metropolitan Police’s investigation, led by Detective Sergeant Myles Bossman, revealed Mustafa’s deliberate exploitation of his patients for personal gratification.

Initially reported in 2016, Mustafa’s arrest came after a patient accused him of sexual assault. Subsequent investigations uncovered multiple instances of sexual misconduct spanning over several months. A second victim came forward in 2020, prompting a new inquiry that led to Mustafa’s arrest in February 2021 and eventual charging in January 2024.

DS Bossman commended the victims for their bravery in supporting the investigation and providing crucial evidence. The sentencing aims to provide closure to the victims and prevent future occurrences of such abuse. The police encourage anyone who may have been a victim of Mustafa’s misconduct to come forward and report any related incidents.

The Metropolitan Police, in its efforts to combat violence against women and girls, reported a significant number of cases in 2024. Initiatives like Operation Soteria have been implemented to enhance responses to sexual assault cases, leading to increased arrests and charges related to these offenses.

The police force reiterated its commitment to supporting victims and holding perpetrators accountable, emphasizing the importance of building trust and confidence in reporting such crimes. Former Deputy Assistant Commissioner Alexis Boon highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of women and girls and combat violence through collaborative partnerships and continued vigilance in law enforcement. Boon has since taken on a new role as Chief Constable of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.
