“Deadly Shooting at Bondi Beach: Suspect’s Pre-Shooting Explanation”

The individual suspected of being involved in the violent incident at Bondi Beach purportedly provided an explanation to his mother prior to the shooting.

Naveed Akram, aged 24, along with his father Sajid, aged 50, allegedly perpetrated a shooting targeting individuals celebrating Hanukkah at the renowned Sydney beach on Sunday. The tragic event resulted in the loss of at least 15 lives and left around 40 individuals injured, marking it as one of the most deadly assaults in Australian history.

Akram, an Australian national, was apprehended and hospitalized where he is currently in critical but stable condition. The shooter, Sajid, who arrived in Australia on a student visa in 1998, was fatally shot at the scene.

Reports revealed that Akram left his residence in west Sydney on the day of the incident and provided an account to his mother before the shooting unfolded. Verena, his mother, recounted that he informed her of going for a swim and scuba diving before mentioning plans to eat. Subsequently, he expressed a desire to remain indoors due to the heat. Verena mentioned that she could not recognize her son in a photo taken at the scene but affirmed that he was a well-behaved individual.

She emphasized that Akram did not possess a firearm, rarely socialized, refrained from alcohol and smoking, and avoided places with negative influences. Akram resided with his family in Bonnyrigg, including his siblings, and authorities have established a restricted zone around their residence.

Law enforcement officers in New South Wales conducted a search at an address in Campsie, where the suspects were believed to have been before the shooting. All six firearms used in the incident were recovered.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon stated that six firearms were retrieved from the crime scene and the Campsie location. Further investigations will determine if these firearms were licensed to the individual and were employed in the Bondi incident.

Authorities classified the attack at Bondi Beach as an act of anti-Semitic terrorism. Previous inquiries by the police had looked into Naveed’s alleged links to Islamic State.
