“Australian Authorities warn against retaliation at Bondi”

Australian authorities have issued a plea to the public not to take any retaliatory actions against those believed to be responsible for the tragic events at Bondi Beach on Sunday. Mal Lanyon, the Police Commissioner for the state of New South Wales, emphasized the need for calm and discouraged any form of retribution.

“Acts of retribution or violence against any segment of society will not be tolerated,” he stated. “We will maintain a strong police presence to ensure public safety. It is a time for unity within the community, and the police will be proactive in safeguarding the public.”

Describing the recent attack on the Bondi and Jewish communities as “abhorrent,” Lanyon highlighted the need for peace and unity during this period of mourning and recovery.

Prior to this statement, Lanyon had cautioned against any form of retributive behavior following the tragic incident at Bondi.

During a press conference, the Commissioner emphasized, “This is not the time for seeking vengeance. It is a time for the community to come together in grief and healing. The New South Wales Police will continue to fulfill its duty by preventing and investigating crimes while providing support to the community.”

The NSW Police have initiated Operation Shelter in response to the Bondi tragedy, deploying a large number of officers to offer protection and reassurance to the Jewish communities.

“Under Operation Shelter, we have deployed 328 officers to ensure the safety of the Jewish community. Our presence will be prominent in areas frequented by the community to provide comfort and security,” stated Lanyon.

The recent events at Bondi Beach mark one of the deadliest incidents in Australia since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

In light of the tragedy, the then-Conservative government of Australia swiftly implemented significant changes to gun laws, including a nationwide gun buyback scheme that saw a wave of firearms surrendered by the public.

The strictness of national and state firearms legislation has come under scrutiny following the Bondi attacks, with revelations that one of the alleged shooters possessed legally obtained weapons as a registered gun owner.

NSW Premier Chris Binns has pledged to strengthen gun laws in response to the incident, particularly focusing on the regulation of firearms licenses.

One of the shooters held a Category AB firearms license, which covers various non-self-loading longarms according to NSW state laws, including air rifles, rimfire rifles, centrefire rifles, and shotguns operated by specific actions.
