As a Filipina Canadian residing in Vancouver, my introduction to hockey happened during the 2010 Winter Olympics. It was the thrilling final match against the U.S., where Sidney Crosby’s golden goal in overtime sealed the victory. Witnessing the nation’s jubilation post-win, with cars honking and people singing the national anthem across Canada, left me awe-inspired by the unifying power of this sport.
My interest in hockey piqued post-migration from the Philippines to Canada, with the sport seeming to follow me in various aspects of my new life. Attending my first live game in 2014, watching the Edmonton Oilers face the Anaheim Ducks, immersed me in the electric atmosphere of Rexall Place. The sea of orange-clad fans chanting “Let’s gooo Oilers!” made me feel part of something larger than life, solidifying my growing admiration for hockey.
Discovering the significance of hockey in Canadian culture became evident as I settled in Edmonton. Co-workers sporting Oilers’ jerseys and the emotional impact of game outcomes on the office atmosphere highlighted the sport’s deep-rooted influence. Terms like the “Battle of Alberta” and the legendary Wayne Gretzky’s cultural stature further deepened my fascination with the sport.
Immersing myself in hockey, I watched games regularly, especially key events like the Battle of Alberta. Hanging Oilers’ logo towels in my kitchen symbolized my growing affection for the sport and my integration into Canadian life. Engaging in hockey conversations at work created a sense of belonging and community, enriching my connection with the country.
Relocating to Vancouver in 2016 brought a pause to my hockey enthusiasm until meeting Mike, a passionate hockey fan, in 2018. Our shared love for the sport reignited my passion, with Saturday night hockey and nachos becoming our cherished routine. Our diverse sports preferences, including my love for tennis, led to a mutual appreciation and understanding of each other’s interests.
Attending hockey games together, supporting both the Canucks and Oilers, symbolizes our unity despite different team loyalties. Our relationship reflects the merging of diverse backgrounds and interests, with mutual respect and love prevailing. Hockey has not only become a shared passion but also a significant thread weaving through our bond, enriching our weekends and strengthening our connection.
From my initial exposure to hockey during the 2010 Olympics to present-day experiences, my journey with the sport has been transformative. Hockey has become more than a game to me; it embodies patriotism, community spirit, cultural integration, and meaningful relationships, shaping my evolving narrative as a Canadian resident.
